What is organic agriculture?

  • Organic agriculture is old fashioned, traditional agriculture.
  • Organic agriculture is certified production of food crops that eliminates use of synthetic growth hormones, pesticides, fungicides and industrial fertilizer, in addition to strict attention to animal welfare and biological diversity.
  • Organic agriculture is the same as agro-ecology and means that farmers use methods similar to ecological systems.

Why are organic farms unique learning arenas?

  • Organic farms are more willing to accept visitors and show them their production.

  • On the organic farm the students will be taught by the farmer who tells from his/her own experience.

Why should an organic farmer open his/her farm for schools and kindergartens?

  • Visiting schools pay a fee that is additional income.
  • The farmer on an organic farm needs new tasks to fill out his/her daily schedule.
  • The farmer has not only a chance to bridge the gap between producer and customer, but also can re-integrate his/her farm in the local community through the active visits of schools to the farm.

Why can visits to organic farms said to be the foundation for sustainable education?
